Uruguay to Increase Agro Ties with Iran

The Uruguayan Agriculture Ministry announced that Montevideo plans to export agricultural products to the Islamic Republic and cooperate with its scientists in agricultural research, veterinary medicine, and fisheries, the Latin American website America Economia reported on Friday. Uruguayan Livestock, Agriculture, and Fishing Minister Tabare Aguerre recently visited Iran to negotiate on issues concerning the country's markets for the beef, lamb, poultry, citrus, milk, blueberry, wool, and rice industries. He also held meetings with the Iranian agriculture, trade, and industry ministers and visited Iranian production and irrigation facilities. In January, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani met with his Uruguayan counterpart, Ivonne Pasada, and called for the expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries. Larijani said the industrial, agricultural, and energy sectors are the most important areas where the two countries should expand their friendly cooperation. Agriculture plays an important role in Uruguay's economy. The agricultural sector accounts for 11 percent of the country's GDP and is still the main foreign exchange earner.
