Opposition Warns of Chaos in Bahrain

Al-Wefaq leader, Sheikh Ali Salman said on Wednesday that the situation in Bahrain will worsen unless the government writes up a new constitution and holds fair elections. "I think we have two options. The first option is that we all work hard and communicate in a serious way in order to reach a new constitution that leads to solid national reconciliation. The other option, God forbid, is that our country will fall into chaos which nobody wants in this country, we will do our utmost to make the first option work," Salman said. Al-Wefaq, which works within the political system and had taken part in elections before walking out of parliament last week, has repeatedly called for the prime minister to be elected rather than being appointed by the king. Salman's remarks came as tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters gathered in the capital's Pearl Square for the tenth consecutive day, demanding the fall of the regime. The protesters have also called for the release of political prisoners and an investigation into the deaths of the protesters. So far, seven pro-democracy protesters have been killed and many others wounded during clashes with security forces. Some protesters have also called on Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifah to step down. The protesters have vowed remain camped out in Pearl Square and have refused to enter talks with the Crown Prince until their demands are met. In an attempt to contain massive pro-democracy demonstrations, Bahraini authorities released 23 political prisoners on Wednesday after a pardon by King Hamad.
