Iranian Parliamentary Delegation in New York for IPU Meeting
The lawmakers were welcomed by Iranian ambassador to UN Mohammad Khazaei. Iranian parliament members Fatemeh Ajorloo and Fatemeh Alia will explain activities of their parliaments in line with elevating women situation, their access to education, technology and creating proper female job opportunities in this meeting. Coincide with the IPU meeting, 55th session of the commission on the Status of Women (UN-CSW) will take place at the UN Headquarters from February 22 to March 4. The commission is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women, the problems they face in education, science and technology. The Iranian deputies will also attend the inauguration ceremony of the UN Women. Representatives of many countries will expound on measures and activities of their states on “the improvement of women situation, their access to education, technology and jobs” during the IPU meeting at the United Nations. Last year, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet to head United Nations Women (UN Women), a newly created entity to oversee all of the world body’s programs aimed at promoting women’s rights and full participation in global affairs. The new body -- which will receive a large boost in funding and become operational in January – is a merger of four UN agencies and offices, the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW). “UN Women will promote the interests of women and girls across the globe,” Ban told reporters in announcing the appointment. “Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, highly honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN agencies and many partners in both the public and private sector.” The new entity is set to have an annual budget of at least $500 million, double the current combined resources of the four agencies it comprises. The IPU was established in 1889 by William Randal Cremer (United Kingdom) and Frédéric Passy (France). It was the first permanent forum for political multilateral negotiations. Initially, the organization was for individual parliamentarians, but has since transformed into an international organization of the parliaments of sovereign states. The national parliaments of 143 countries are members of the IPU, and seven regional parliamentary assemblies are associate members. The IPU has permanent observer status at the United Nations.
