Speaker: US Unable to Handle World Affairs

"The US wants to maintain its prestige as superpower on the one hand, while it does not have the capacity for same on the other," Larijani said in a ceremony here in Tehran on Thursday. He blasted Washington's support for the dictator regimes in the world, and added that the US has to withdraw now step by step in view of the widespread popular uprisings. The remarks by the Iranian parliament speaker came as thousands of people take to the streets in different cities across Libya to call for Muammar Qaddafi's resignation, as more and more high-ranking officials are abandoning the regime. The regime has already lost control of Misarata, Zuara and Zawiya in the west. Opposition protesters are now in control of major centers in the east. Forces loyal to Gaddafi are reportedly using everything at their disposal to put down the revolution. There have been reports of the regime using poison gas against demonstrators in Misarata. Since the beginning of the revolution, Libyans have been reporting that Qaddafi has recruited mercenaries to support his bloody crackdown.
