Cabinet Must Be Formed Quickly: Mikati

"We have assumed this difficult responsibility to extinguish the flame of strife and work for stability," he said in a speech to supporters in his hometown Tripoli on Friday, the Press TV correspondent in Tripoli reported. "Tripoli has created national leaders. It is a city of moderation and we are all in its service. We return to you to derive our strength and determination from Tripoli to begin a major mission to restore its role in the country so that it may once again become Lebanon's second capital, as it has always been," Mikati said. Mikati apologized for the delay in forming the cabinet, adding that he was trying to gather together an effective team. He went on to say that all controversial issues could be resolved through dialogue, telling supporters that dialogue among the various factions and national unity were the keys to maintaining stability in Lebanon. On January 25, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman issued a decree appointing Hezbollah-backed candidate Najib Mikati as the country's new prime minister, following the collapse of Prime Minister Saad Hariri's government. In the vote to approve him as prime minister, Mikati received 68 votes in the 128-seat parliament. Hariri's government collapsed due to a dispute over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), which is investigating the 2005 assassination of his father, former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, who was killed, along with 22 other people, in a bombing in Beirut.
