Iraqi Parliament Urges Probe into Killings

At least 15 people were killed and many others injured on Friday after Iraqi security forces clashed with demonstrators protesting against corruption, unemployment and poor government services. Nujaifi said in a statement that the Iraqi parliament supports the demands of the demonstrators for better living condition and their civil rights, Xinhua news agency reported. Nujaifi also urged the government “to fulfill its responsibility in protecting the lives of demonstrators and saving the government and private assets.” He also said that security forces should “indentify rioters” and release those “innocent” people arrested in the protests. The top parliamentarian also called on demonstrators to refrain from “disturbing public order and attacking public properties.” On Thursday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki urged citizens not to participate in Friday's planned protests, claiming that demonstrations were organized by al-Qaeda insurgents and loyalists to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to create chaos in the country. Iraqi protesters took to the streets of the capital Baghdad and other major cities for a "Day of Rage" on Friday.
