Italy Says Gaddafi No Longer in Control

“It seems that effectively Gaddafi no longer controls the situation in Libya... If we can all come to an agreement, we can end this bloodbath and support the Libyan people,” AFP quoted Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as saying at a political rally in Rome on Saturday. Peace activists, on the other hand, demonstrated in front of the parliament calling on the Italian government to stop selling weapons to Libya. Riccardo Noury, spokesman for Amnesty International in Italy, said Italy has been sending large amounts of arms to Libya for several years. Demonstrators also condemned the 79-million-euro worth of weaponry sold to Libya by the Italian government in 2009, stressing that those weapons are now used to murder protesters in the North African country. “We don't know if these arms have been used these days but the Italian government should guarantee that no weapons sent from Italy are being used these days," he added. Italy is a major trade partner of Libya, buying much of the African nation's oil and natural gas.
