Turkish Parliament Bids Farewell to Erbakan

Representatives from several parties highlighted Erbakan’s political and individual character while criticizing the Feb. 28 post-modern coup against the then-Welfare Party, or RP, leader in 1997.

The General Assembly convened at 3 p.m. in parliament, where a moment of silence was followed by speeches by government and party speakers.

State Minister Mehmet Aydın spoke for the government, recalling Erbakan as the internationally recognized leader of the “National View,” emphasizing his democratic politics, independent foreign affairs and inclination toward science, technology, innovation, education and culture. He said Erbakan was against violent street protests despite the Feb. 28 post-modern coup, hurriyetdailynews.com reported.

Erbakan served as the prime minister in a coalition government formed in 1996 by his Welfare Party (RP) and the True Path Party. In 1997, Turkey’s top prosecutor charged the RP with being "a focal point for anti-secular activities" and he was forced to step down as the premier the same year.

The party was shut down by the country’s Constitutional Court in January 1998, and the court banned Erbakan from politics for a period of five years.
