Larijani Warns of West Militarism

“The United States seeks to ensure its dominance over the region but vigilance of the (regional) nations will foil their plots,” Larijani said in a meeting with Belarusian Justice Minister Viktor Golovanov in Tehran Wednesday.

The remarks come on the heels of recent media reports suggesting that the United States and its allies may be preparing the ground for military intervention in Libya.

The US Senate has unanimously passed a resolution calling for a no-fly zone over crisis-hit Libya.

The US Senate Armed Services Committee said all options, including the military option, should be on the table.

Larijani said the region has entered a new phase following the current revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa, adding, “Democracy will prevail in such an atmosphere and will benefit independent countries in the region.”

The Iranian Majlis speaker urged independent countries to establish a new order in the region by boosting their cooperation.

He further pointed out that terrorism is among the main problems in the region and stressed the importance of bolstering regional and international ties to confront the adverse consequences of the phenomenon.

Larijani called for the expansion of relations and the strengthening of ties between Iran and Belarus and said, “Global powers are unhappy with the enhanced cooperation in different spheres between the two countries.”

The Belarusian minister, for his part, reflected Larijani's comments on the Western dissatisfaction with Tehran-Minsk ties, saying, “The policy of Belarus is based on strengthening all-out cooperation with Iran.”

Golovanov said agreements signed between the two countries on the extradition of criminals and judiciary cooperation would be a major step towards the expansion of ties.
