Kyrgyz Parliament Delays Vote on Taxing Fuel Sales to US Base

Pro-government deputy Azamat Arapbayev said Thursday that a bill on the levy needs further scrutiny before parliament can vote on it next week, Canadian Press reported.

U.S. officials have rejected the proposal to place a $100 duty on every ton of fuel sold to the base, saying that it violates the terms of the lease agreement.

Manas Transit Center, which lies adjacent to Kyrgyzstan's main civilian airport outside the capital, Bishkek, serves as a vital transportation and refueling hub for military operations in nearby Afghanistan. Aviation fuel needs at Manas are slated to reach up to 390,000 tons this year.
