Labor MP Tristram Hunt called on the prince to help change the 300-year-old Act of Settlement Law, which gives some priorities to male heirs.

"Perhaps it would be worth the young Prince William subtly showing his support for the ongoing campaign to repeal the Act of Settlement," Hunt said.

"As the son of Princess Diana, who struggled against the same archaic elements of palace protocol, such a signal would seem almost natural," he added.

Labor MP Keith Vaz had earlier proposed a parliamentary procedure to remove the discrimination between the sexes when it comes to the future monarch's nomination. However, the proposal could not progress due to the limited time.

According to Hunt, there should be no distinction if the first child of William and Kate Middleton should be a girl.

"He should use the coming months to signal the end of male primogeniture and if -- God Willing -- he and Catherine have children then his eldest child of whichever sex should succeed him,” he stated.
