Estonia Holds First Post-Euro Poll

An opinion poll on Thursday suggested Prime Minister Andrus Ansip's two-party coalition will win over the left-leaning opposition on Sunday elections, AP reported.

According to the poll, Ansip's coalition is expected to secure half of the vote, while the opposition is predicted to win nearly 25 percent of the ballots.

In that scenario, the current premier's Reform Party and its coalition partner Pro Patria and Res Republica Union would secure a majority in the 101-seat parliament.

This is Estonia's first elections since it became a eurozone member in December 2010.

Ansip became the first prime minister to win a general election since Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 after five decades under Moscow's control.

One of the European Union's least populated countries, Estonia is going through an economic downturn, marked by a high unemployment rate of 14 percent.

Estonia's economy shrank by 14.1 percent in 2009, one of the world's deepest recessions, before growing 3.1 percent in 2010.
