Speaker: Current Developments in Region Serve Peace, Disprove Terrorism

Speaking in a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Iraq, Ed Melkart Monday, Larijani said US hegemony, despotism and terrorism in the region helped extremism and terrorism to spread. “Creation of democratic governments in the region will help disprove terrorism and establish security and stability in Iraq,” said the top Iranian lawmaker.

The speaker stressed that real democracy, respect for Iraq’s national sovereignty and withdrawal of the occupiers were the only way to restore development and prosperity to war-torn Iraq.

“The principal policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is based on respect for Iraq’s territorial integrity, its independence and political sovereignty as well as its national solidarity and growing trend of democracy,” said Larijani, adding: “So far, we in Iran have spared no efforts in helping the Iraqi government and nation in this respect.”

The UN envoy in the meeting briefed Larijani on the international body’s measures taken to improve the situation in Iraq. “Cooperation between Iraq and its neighbors play a significant role in Iraq’s tranquility and development,” Melkart stated.

He said terrorism and unemployment were among important challenges faced by the Iraqi government today and underlined the role of the regional countries, particularly Iran in helping Baghdad overcome these problems.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi emphasized that Iraq should regain its proper position and stature in the international arena.

"Iraq should reclaim its rightful position in the international arena," Salehi told the visiting UN envoy Sunday.

Salehi voiced Iran's readiness to cooperate with Iraq in all fields to help the country with its development and progress.

"With the help of the United Nations and other international bodies, the Islamic Republic must help prepare the ground for Iraq to regain the standing it deserves at the international level," the Iranian minister emphasized.

Meanwhile the UN representative called on international bodies and the World Bank to allocate funds and establish necessary mechanisms to settle environmental problems facing Iraq.

He added that Iranian and Iraqi experts would then be able to resolve any difficulties that may stand in the way of maintaining amicable relations between the two neighbors.
