Iraqi Kurds Mark Uprising against Saddam

March 7 has always been a day of celebration and pride for the Kurdish people who fought and won their freedom 20 years ago. For many this year was no different as they cheered in anticipation of the arrival of Iraq's president and leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Jalal Talabani.

PUK spokesman Azad Jondyani spoke to Press TV on the occasion of this important day.

Talabani addressed the crowds speaking of the significance of the day of uprising. He said the ruling parties are not afraid of protests as it's everyone's right to express their demands to their government adding that the PUK had submitted 17 points to parliament in line with the demonstrators demands.

While he spoke, across town anti-government protesters massed for the 16th consecutive day, calling for stronger actions, drastic government reform and an end to corruption.

But not all have lost faith in the ruling parties. Hundreds hung PUK flags from their cars and marched through the streets in support of the leaders they say freed them from dictatorship, tyranny and the genocide inflicted on the Kurdish people by Saddam Hussein.

Celebrations are expected to continue throughout the night.

The mood here is one of celebration, but as protesters gather across town, many say Sulaymanieh is becoming a town divided. Extra forces have been put on standby in case of conflict.
