Yemenis Demand Ouster of President

The sit-in demo at the square is in its fourth week now. A funeral procession was also staged for a protester, killed during a recent clash between security forces and protesters as they tried to put up more tents around the square.

Protesters want President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who's been in for 32 years, to step down. Saleh has announced plans to change the constitution and set up a parliamentary system. But the opposition and protesters have rejected the initiative.

President Saleh has also assured that, under the new constitution, there will be separate branches of executive and legislative government. However, the initiative has been rejected by the opposition who say the move is inadequate and comes too late.

The public discontent goes beyond Saleh's long-running rule. High unemployment, poverty and corruption are all big concerns among the Yemenis.

In the capital Sana'a, a counter-rally was held by government supporters in Tahrir square. But anti-regime protests are by far larger than loyalist demos and have continued nationwide. In the city of Aden, security forces opened fire on protesters, leaving at least two people dead and a number of others injured.

Anti government protests seem to be gaining momentum, leaving behind the president's initiative, who insisted to continue his presidency term till 2013.
