Iranian Gen Urges Firm Passive Defense

Brigadier General Yahya Rahim-Safavi made the remarks in a conference on passive defense in the Iranian capital, Tehran on Sunday, ISNA reported.

Rahim-Safavi, who is also the senior military adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said that identifying the threats and engaging in disputes and wars are difficult today, noting that under such circumstances passive defense can have an effective and influential role.

The general defined passive defense as the measure to reduce the vulnerability of the country's key infrastructures and to minimize the effects of damages caused by natural disasters and hostile actions without launching any attack, and stressed its importance in safeguarding economic, scientific and cultural accomplishments of the country.

Addressing the same event, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani downplayed threats posed against the Islamic Republic.

"Threats against Iran are not on an upward curve. This curve is on a downward trend thanks to the resistance of the Islamic Republic and insistence of the Iranian nation on ideals of the Islamic Revolution," he said.

Larijani added that the era of threats against Iran has come to an end.

"Iran is now in a stable situation and the enemies cannot adopt a hostile position against Iran," he said.
