British MP Pays Tributes to Benazir Bhutto in Parliament

TEHRAN, March 14 (ICANA) – The British Muslim member of Parliament Rehman Chisti paid rich tribute to the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto while expressing his views at a debate held in connection with International Women’s Day in the UK Parliament.

The Conservative MP from Gillingham, South East England, acknowledged Shaheed Mohtarma  as a great stateswoman in the world, APP reported. He said:  “I was very fortunate and privileged to have worked with such a great international stateswoman as a special adviser before entering parliament.”

Paying rich tributes, he said Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, twice Prime Minister of Pakistan, led with conviction in empowering women and all citizens in society, and paid the ultimate price with her life in her fight for democracy in Pakistan.

MP Chishti further said that as Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto became a role model for women around the developing world, in male dominated societies that they could be future leaders of their country.

Highlighting her achievement as Prime Minister he pointed out that she had 86,000 Primary and Secondary schools built in her term, as she saw education as means to empower society and women in particular.

During the period of her government 100,000 female health workers fanned out across the country, bringing health care, nutrition, pre and post natal care to millions of poorest citizens of her country, Chishti added.

Women were allowed to participate in international sports and women’s police stations were established to help women who suffered from domestic violence furthermore Women’s Banks were established to give micro loans to women to start small businesses,  he further noted.

Chishti said:  “We today need to pay tribute to women like Benazir Bhutto, who have been great role models for women around the world.  Likewise we need to pay tribute to women like Aun Sung Sui Kyi, another courageous brave democracy leader of her country.  In Brazil it is great to see another female leader of her country President Dilma Rouseff.”

He further stated that gender equality is not only a basic human right but its achievement has enormous socio economic ramifications, empowering women fuels thriving economies spurring productivity and growth.
