Indian Navy Captures 61 Somali Pirates

India's Navy said in a statement on Monday that two Indian naval ships intercepted the ship at sea nearly 1,100 kilometers off the southern coast of Kochi.

The pirates aboard Vega, a Mozambican cargo vessel seized in late December 2010 and used as a launch pad for attacks in the high seas, were detained after a heavy gunfight.

The developments come days after the Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna said that more than 50 Indians on five ships are being held by Somali pirates.

"The government will take appropriate action to safeguard the welfare of the Indian sailors," Krishna said during recent parliament proceedings in New Delhi.

The waters off the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia are considered the world's most dangerous for persistent piracy attempts in the area.

World countries have been trying to counter piracy in Somali waters.
