China PM Expresses Condolences to Japan

He said that China had sent a rescue team and supplies to Japan, just as Japan sent rescue workers and supplies to China after a huge earthquake hit the province of Sichuan in 2008.

Wen was speaking to journalists at the press conference. he has given each year at end of the annual session of China's legislature, the National People's Congress.

Held in China's parliament building the Great Hall of the People, both foreign and domestic journalists look forward to the prime minister's annual press conference. It's the only time they can directly address questions to him, although their questions must receive prior approval.

When asked about political reform, Wen said that greater public criticism and supervision of China's government should be allowed. He said China had been following the turbulence in some North African and Middle Eastern countries, although he rejected any comparison between them and China.

Most of the conference, however, focused on China's 12th five year plan for social and economic development, which was approved by China's 3,000-member National People's Congress on the same day; the tenth and concluding day of its annual session.

The plan sets out an ambitious agenda for transformation; from and economy where growth it achieved at almost any cost, to one where development takes place in a less polluting, more sustainable and fairer way.

A new stage in development, then, for China.
