MP: Jordan King Visit Meant to Taint Govt.

“No such invitation has been extended and some individuals have [only] raised the issue to deal a blow to President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, but they need to know that their efforts are in vain,” Javad Abtahi said on Tuesday.

The Iranian parliamentarian's remarks come on the heels of media reports indicating that Jordanian King Malik Abdullah II had received an official invitation to visit the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The reports sparked wide criticism in Iran where the Parliament's (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission expressed its opposition to the Jordanian King's planned visit to Tehran.

Iranian lawmakers lambasted such a move, arguing that it would run counter to the country's national interests.

“The invitation and visit of Jordanian King Malik Abdullah is certainly against our national interests at this point in time and given the current conditions,” head of the commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said on Monday.

Abtahi called on Iran's Foreign Ministry to officially reject and denounce the move and rule out the media hype and the existing propaganda against the Iranian government.
