Tibetans-in-Exile Vote to Elect Premier

Tibetans in exile are going to the polls to choose a new prime minister who will take over the Dalai Lama's political duties.

“As many as 83,399 exiled Tibetans settled in India, Nepal, Bhutan, the United States, European countries, Australia, Japan, Russia and other countries were eligible to exercise their franchise to elect the prime minister and 43 members of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile," Jamphel Choesang, chief election commissioner, said Sunday, Press Trust of India reported.

The vote comes after the Tibetan Spiritual Leader the 75-year-old Dalai Lama stood firm on his decision to quit politics.

The Tibetan parliament-in-exile is discussing constitutional changes to meet the Dalai Lama's request that the prime minister become the head of government.

The front-runner candidate is International Law Expert Lobsang Sangay.
