Merkel Party Wins Saxony-Anhalt Elections

The Left party received 23.8 percent of the vote; the Social Democrats remained at 21.5 percent.

The Social Democrats are the only party in the newly elected state parliament, who could chose a coalition partner, but already ruled out becoming a junior partner under a Left minister president.

Merkel's coalition partner at federal level, the pro business Free Democrats, failed to get over the five percent hurdle, while the Greens could double their previous result, receiving seven percent of the vote.

A continuation of the grand coalition though is the most likely outcome of this second of a total of seven state elections this year.

Amid an ongoing nuclear debate in Germany the strong performance of the Greens sent a clear signal to Angela Merkel, who is very much in danger of losing power in the most important of this year's elections in Baden Wuerttemberg next Sunday.
