Senior Lawmaker Questions UN Stance on Libya

“The previous experience of launching an attack on a country under the pretext of supporting people has proved that the West pursues deceitful aims and merely seeks to stabilize its own interests,” said a member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Esmail Kowsari on Monday.

He questioned Western objectives behind military operation against the crisis-hit Libya and emphasized that the late reaction of Western countries to the killings of the Libyan nation has raised serious doubts about their true aims.

“The performance of dominant countries in occupying oppressed states has always brought their objectives behind such moves into question,” the Iranian lawmaker opined.

Kowsari pointed to the West's broad economic ties with Libya prior to the popular uprisings against embattled ruler of the North African country Muammar Gaddafi and reiterated that Western countries “are concerned about their own economic interests, particularly the Libyan oil supply to the international market.

His comments come on the heels of recent air attacks by Western forces against Libyan targets, claimed to be aimed at crippling Libya's air defenses and preventing its army from waging attacks against protesting civilians in a month-old revolution seeking the downfall of Gaddafi's 42-year rule.

Dozens of civilians have been killed in Libya since the US, Britain, France and some other Western countries launched their attacks on the North African country.
