This comes as three soldiers have also been killed in clashes between army troops and Republican Guards in the city of al-Mukalla.

Thousands of protesters across the country have been calling for the ouster of the embattled ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh since mid-January.

Late on Sunday, President Saleh sacked his entire government amid continued pressure from the oppression-weary public.

Several military commanders have now joined the opposition.

Yemeni deputy parliament speaker and the governor of the southern province of Aden along with the country's ambassadors to Syria, Japan and the UN have also stepped down.

Dozens have been killed and hundreds more wounded during anti-government demonstrations in Yemen.
