MP: Muslim Ties Top Iran Foreign Policy

“The expansion and consolidation of ties with Muslim countries are among top priorities of Iran's diplomacy for the new Iranian calendar year,” Head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Alaeddin Boroujerdi told ICANA on Wednesday.

He added that the ongoing developments in the region have undermined the power of the United States and many Western countries, noting that, “The grounds have been prepared for the Islamic Republic to have a strong presence in the region and help regional countries.”

The Iranian lawmaker pointed to great achievements made by the country in various fields of science and technology and expressed the Islamic Republic's readiness to transfer its experience to regional countries.

His comments come as developments continue to unfold in the Middle East and North Africa where people have been staging frequent rallies to protest against their governments.

People in Tunisia and Egypt have fought against the regimes and toppled President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia and President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt after decades-long grips on power. In Libya, similar developments are underway as Libyan revolutionaries try to put an end to Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year rule.

Similarly, anti-government demonstrations, fueled by rising poverty and unemployment, are also on the move in Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
