MP: Iran Unfazed in Face of Sanctions'

Sanctions have not swayed the Iranian nation and have in most cases brought about self-reliance in various areas so far,” parliament member Ahmad Mahdavi said on Friday.

The Iranian legislator emphasized on the naming of the new Persian year as the Year of Economic Jihad (struggle) by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and said the initiative is the best strategy to confront the “ominous conspiracies” of the “arrogant US government.”

Mahdavi reiterated that jihad-like efforts, promotion of self-sufficiency and the production of raw materials inside the country can foil sanctions.

On June 9, the UN Security Council adopted a US-engineered sanctions resolution against Iran over Western allegations that Tehran may be intending to develop a military nuclear program.

Iranian officials have fiercely rejected such allegations and stress that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the country has a legitimate right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology.
