Pakistanis Slam Qur'an Desecration

The demonstrators called such an act a threat to religious harmony, and termed the burning of the holy book a conspiracy against Islam, a Press TV correspondent reported on Friday.

On March 20, American evangelical preacher Wayne Sapp set fire to a copy of the Holy Qur'an in a small church in the American state.

Terry Jones, the head of Dove World Outreach Center who had planned to burn Qur'an last year on the anniversary of September 11, 2001 attacks, was also present during the event.

Religious scholars in Pakistan passed a decree against the preacher for committing what they called a reprehensible act.

“The religious scholars have passed a unanimous decree against the American who desecrated the Holy Qur'an,” said Abdul Majeed, a religious scholar.

The demonstrators urged the United Nations to take this issue into consideration.

"We are going to present public resolution to the United Nations' mission in Islamabad. I think desecration of the Holy Qur'an by no way is going to help the peace in the world," said a Pakistani senator.

Pakistan's permanent representative at the United Nations also earlier sent clear and determined statements about the incident to the US and the world body.

Earlier this week, Pakistani President Asif Zardari had firmly denounced the act in an address to the parliament.
