The Egyptian Army spokesman, Ismail Etman, told a news conference in Cairo on Monday that parliamentary or presidential elections would not be held while the emergency law is still in place.

Egypt's emergency law has been in place since 1981.

The parliamentary elections are slated for September, but no date has yet been decided for a presidential vote.

The announcement comes weeks after Mubarak handed over power to Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is headed by Defense Minister Gen. Mohammed Tantawi.

The council took over power after the former president resigned earlier this year amid a nationwide popular uprising against his rule.

The Egyptian military council, which placed Mubarak and his family under house arrest on Monday, has come under pressure to hand over power to a civilian government.

Activists have demanded the release of political prisoners, the lifting of a 30-year-old state of emergency and the disbandment of military court.
