TEHRAN, March 28 (ICANA) – Australia's parliament has endorsed the government's contentious plan to roll out a 36 billion Australian dollar ($37 billion) fiber optic high-speed national broadband network.

Australia's Broadband Law Passes Parliament

The House of Representatives vote on Monday was the final hurdle for the network that was a major campaign issue ahead of elections in August last year that returned Prime Minister Julia Gillard's center-left Labor Party government to power, AP reported.

The conservative opposition had promised to deliver if elected a smaller, slower AU$6 billion network with a range of technologies including optical fiber, wireless and DSL.
