Myanmar Swears in a New Government

State television and radio reported that the new government, headed by President Thein Sein, was sworn in by the parliament in the capital of Naypyitaw.

"Altogether 58 new cabinet members, including the president, two vice-presidents, officials and ministers were sworn in this morning at the Union Parliament," a senior official said.

Sein had served as former prime minister in the military government and is a key ally of the powerful General Than Shwe, who has ruled the country for the last two decades.

President Thein's government, packed with retired and serving soldiers, will replace the junta that was in place for the past decades.

This comes after November's general elections, the first vote in 20 years.

The vote was widely criticized by the West and opposition activists as a sham.

Several countries have pledged to seek improved ties with the new government.
