The British Foreign Office approved Koussa's defection to the country on Wednesday, state-run BBC reported.

According to a Libyan government spokesman, Koussa's travel to the UK was a diplomatic mission.

However, the UK Foreign Ministry says that Koussa has travelled to the country to resign from his post and flee the Libyan regime.

Earlier today, the UK expelled five Libyan diplomats due to the possible threat they could bring for the national security of the country.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi forces have recaptured the eastern oil town of Ras Lanuf, forcing the revolutionary forces to flee to the east.

The members of the international community met in London on Wednesday, over the current situation in Libya as the United Nations has backed the military action upon the country.

On 21 March, British fighter jets struck Libya's air defenses due to Gaddafi's brutal crackdowns on the Libyan revolutionary forces.

The UK has so far involved in more than 160 aerial missions over Libya since the foreign intervention started on 19 March.
