Turkish Platform Demands More Women in Parliament

“We want election lists to be ordered gender-sequentially,” said platform member Çiğdem Aydın after meeting Sunday with Republican People’s Party, or CHP, leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, according to Doğan News Agency.

“In the first four rows, there should be two women candidates. The party should contribute to the money that female candidates spend during the election campaign. The party should announce its women’s politics clearly. [Kılıçdaroğlu] said, ‘We will do this in a clear way, these are very legitimate demands,’” said Aydın.

“Kılıçdaroğlu said that he will take our demands into consideration,” she said.

Another member of the platform, Meral Tamer, a journalist with the daily Milliyet, said, “We want to see more women in Parliament. We will follow this issue.”

Women currently have problems becoming involved in politics as they cannot gain entry to decision-making mechanisms, said platform member Müjgan Suver.

“Women cannot use their right to be elected. Within the scope of a program, every political party should explain to society what they will do concerning gender equality so that we can use our votes accordingly,” Suver said.

The platform was headed by Vuslat Doğan Sabancı, the executive board head of daily Hürriyet.
