Lawmaker: ME Dictators Play Blame Game on Iran

“The authoritarian and dictatorial regimes and the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC) do not know what to do in the face of the recent regional developments and popular movements and uprisings,” Hossein Ebrahimi, Deputy Head of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Foreign Policy Commission, said Wednesday.

“The recent regional developments are not guided by a specific leader or party; therefore, the dictators and authoritarians in the region have no idea who to blame,” he added.

In Sunday's extraordinary meeting of the [P]GCC member states, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) claimed that Iran was 'meddling' in Bahrain affairs after Tehran warned Riyadh that it was "playing with fire" by deploying troops in neighboring Bahrain.

“If anything happens in the region, the authoritarian regimes put the blame on Iran,” Ebrahimi pointed out, noting that during the recent popular movements, “The Islamic Revolution of Iran has served as a model for the people in the Middle East.”

The Iranian lawmaker made a reference to the presence of Saudi-led forces in Bahrain and said while “some countries illegally invade and occupy other states, they accuse Iran of interfering in the affairs of regional countries.”

Saudi Arabia has deployed more than 1,000 troops to Bahrain at the request of Manama to suppress anti-government protesters eying political reforms in crisis-hit Bahrain.

In a similar move, the UAE has dispatched around 500 police forces to the oil-rich Persian Gulf monarchy.

Bahrain's government has continued its military crackdown on anti-government protesters who demand the overthrow of the al-Khalifa dynasty on top of constitutional reforms.

Several Bahrainis have lost their lives so far and hundreds of others have sustained injuries following the violent crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are both US allies in the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East. Bahrain is also home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.
