Romania Asks EU Parliament to Lift Immunity of MP

Adrian Severin, a former Romanian foreign minister, and two other members of the European Parliament were exposed after journalists from Britain's Sunday Times newspaper posed as lobbyists and enticed them to agree to amend laws in return for money.

The ministry's request was filed on behalf of Romanian anti-corruption prosecutors who plan to investigate Severin on suspicion of bribe taking and abuse of power, Reuters reported.

Romania and its southern neighbour Bulgaria are trying to join the European Union's passport-free Schengen zone, four years after both joined the bloc. But France and Germany have opposed their membership because of concerns over corruption.

Severin was shown on a video posted on the Internet outlining how he put forward amendments to laws at the supposed lobbyists' request, agreeing to send an invoice.

In March, he was expelled from the European Parliament's socialist voting bloc. The two other EU legislators have resigned their posts in the legislature, but Severin has refused to follow suit.
