Kosovo Names Neutral Presidential Candidate

"We nominate Atifete Jah-jaga as our candidate for the President of the Republic of Kosovo and express the full support of our parties for her candidature," AFP quoted Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci as saying on Wednesday.

Jah-jaga, who is the deputy police commander, will be the first female president of Kosovo since it unilaterally declared independence from Serbia three years ago.

The deal was struck between the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo and its coalition partner, New Kosovo Alliance, and the leading opposition party, the Democratic League of Kosovo.

The agreement also calls for a string of constitutional and electoral reforms which will set the stage for holding an early presidential and general election once the changes are implemented.

Kosovo tumbled into a political crisis in February after the country's highest court ruled that the election of Behgjet Pacolli as president was unconstitutional.

The ruling by Kosovo's constitutional court came after an opposition party filed a complaint, saying irregularities tarnished the credibility of the voting process.

The court stated that the 120-seat parliament lacked a quorum to elect Pacolli on February 22 due to a walk-out by opposition groups.

Backed by the constitutional court, parliament speaker, Jakup Krasniqi, has temporary taken over as acting president.
