The 36-year-old Jah-jaga, was elected by Kosovo's parliament as new president and the first woman to head the state, with 80 votes of the 100 lawmakers present in the 120-seat chamber, AFP reported on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Kosovo's governing coalition and the opposition parties named Jah-jaga as a neutral presidential candidate after Kosovo's top court ruled last week that the previous presidential election of Behgjet Pacolli was unconstitutional.

The deal was struck between the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo and its coalition partner, New Kosovo Alliance, and the leading opposition party, the Democratic League of Kosovo.

Jah-jaga, the deputy head of Kosovo's police, who has become the first female president of Kosovo since it unilaterally declared independence from Serbia three years ago, has no political background and had never run for office before.

"I never thought that I could reach such a high political position," said Jah-jaga after taking the oath of office, adding "But I have always been ready to serve my country."

In her first speech to the parliament immediately after the vote, the new president also stated that she would diligently pave the way for Kosovo's membership in the European Union.

Kosovo tumbled into a political crisis in February after the country's highest court ruled that the election of Pacolli as president was unconstitutional.

The ruling by Kosovo's constitutional court came after an opposition party filed a complaint, saying irregularities tarnished the credibility of the voting process.
