MP Says Gas Pipelines Blasts Result of "Sabotage"

The cause of the explosions that occurred 74 km on Qom-Delijan road

early on Friday was not immediately known but MP Alireza Salimi said no one was killed in the incident.

The MP from Delijan constituency told ICANA that only a number of people who rushed to put out the fire were slightly injured.

Salimi was convinced that Friday's blasts were sabotage operations and did not rule out their connection with February's explosions in the same region.

The incident comes two months after a similar incident in the same area on February 11, media reported simultaneous explosions on three gas pipelines near the city of Qom. An NIGC spokesman said at the time that "technical problems were not the cause" of the blasts but gave no further explanation.

The National Iranian Gas Company's (NIGC) operation and rescue teams along with other governmental organizations were present at the scene and were investigating the reason for the explosion.

The pipelines carry gas from refineries in southern Iran to the north and northwest.

No group claimed responsibility for the sabotage operations of February which damaged some gas pipelines and temporarily interrupted gas flow.

The Ministry of Petroleum set up a crisis center shortly after the blasts on Friday to follow up the case and take immediate measures to restore gas flow to the people in the north of the country.

Another MP, Naser Sudani voiced concern over the repeated explosions in the oil and gas supply lines and said the Petroleum Ministry must offer explanations about Friday's incident to the parliament. He also urged the ministry officials to take preventive measures to ensure security of the pipelines.
