US Using Human Rights as a Tool: Senior Cleric

“Human rights has become an excuse [for you] to hammer the governments which are opposed to your policies while you yourselves do not respect it (human rights),” said Chairman of the Iranian Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani in an interview with IRNA, addressing American officials who claim to be advocates of human rights.

He touched upon Western allegations of rights violation in Iran, and said, Iran and the West, especially the US, should find common ground when it comes to interpretation of human rights, though there may be some differences of opinion as well.

Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani then lashed out at the United States for failing to respect human rights.

“Do Americans who bang the drums for human rights really walk the talk? Definitely not,” said the top Iranian cleric.

“If they are advocates of human rights, why are they cooperating and have cooperated with Saudi Arabia, Libya and Israel? Are human rights respected in Saudi Arabia, Libya and by the Zionist regime [of Israel]?” he asked.

Washington's collaboration with Riyadh and Tel Aviv shows its claim of supporting human rights is a lie, Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani concluded.
