RCN: NHS Reform Becomes a Disaster

"The Health and Social Care Bill is going through Parliament now and, from a government that promised no more top-down reorganizations, it certainly looks like one to me," RCN Chief Executive Peter Carter said at the union's annual conference held in Liverpool on Monday.

Carter said that nurses struggle with rising costs and increasing workloads while they are told they would face a two-year pay freeze. "We are a long, long way away" from a genuine industrial action, he regretted.

UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was asked to ease the NHS reforms introduces by the coalition due to the tensions the reforms brought to the Health and Social Care Bill.

The Liberal Democrat MP said he would resign if the NHS reform did not slow down. Clegg also agreed that NHS reform needed to be fixed.

"Everybody agrees that it is right to put more financial responsibility in the hands of GPs, who know patients best," he said.

Ministers said they paused health reforms after encountering widespread opposition from NHS professionals, patients and Lib Dems.
