Iran to Reconsider UAE Relations

“The repression of the revolution in Bahrain and the country's stance at the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council is distancing the Emirates from enjoying mutual and brotherly ties with Iran,” Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh said in an interview with Fars News Agency on Monday.

“Iran's financial and commercial ties with the Emirates are not to the benefit of the Islamic Republic,” said Falahatpisheh, who is the head of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

”And in political terms, the Emiratis play a negative role toward Iran and the rest of the region,” the lawmaker added.

Last month, members of the Iranian parliament reviewed a bill on downgrading ties with the United Arab Emirates following the mistreatment of Iranian nationals by Emirati officials.

At the time, the insulting attitude toward Iranians travelling to the UAE was the main reason behind the lawmakers' call for reconsidering ties with the Persian Gulf kingdom.
