West Set to Hijack Arab Revolutions

“The foreigners, especially the US and the Zionist regime (Israel), are trying to usurp these movements and distort their reality,” ISNA quoted Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani as saying at the Assembly's board meeting on Wednesday.

While the Arab world uprising is of an Islamic nature, the West and especially the US is endeavoring to downgrade the movements to an ethnic level, he pointed out.

The senior Iranian cleric emphasized, “The Islamic Iran will never interfere in other countries' affairs ... However, it has always supported the cultural and intellectual aspects of such movements.”

Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani urged Arab governments to “take heed of their nations' natural and Islamic demands.”

He advised the Arab nations to persevere in their path and not to give up their efforts after making an achievement.

Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani also cautioned the Muslim nations not to rely on some of the promises and initiatives of the West, particularly the US, and not be deceived by them.

In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has been sweeping the Arab world.

In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule.

Other revolutions are erupting in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests have swept Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.

Meanwhile, more Arab countries are expected to witness similar revolts.
