MP: West's Intervention in Libya Shameful

“While the share of the innocent Libyans from the developments in the county is to get killed, a few foreign countries try to decide for the future of the people in this country,” Gholamali Haddad-Adel said on Thursday.

The senior Iranian lawmaker was referring to the NATO-led war on Libya which the military alliance says is aimed at saving civilians from attacks by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi's mercenaries and soldiers.

Haddad-Adel said the people's demand in the recent anti-regime uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East has invariably been the “downfall of usurper regimes” and “establishing a civilian government based on Islam.”

He recalled the West's silence on the brutal Saudi-backed repression of popular protests in Bahrain and noted the dual policy of the US and its allies regarding the issue of human rights and democracy.

Despite their ostentatious support they claim for peace and freedom, they actually feel no obligation to observe any of the international laws, he added.

“The presence of US Secretary of Defense [Robert Gates] in Saudi Arabia and [elsewhere] in the region with the aim of sending arms and troops to Bahrain and killing the revolutionary people there reveals the true face of the US,” Haddad-Adel said.

The former parliament speaker, however, expressed optimism on popular awareness in Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen and other Muslim nations, saying people see through the US “lies and hypocrisy,” and will not surrender unless they have achieved their goal of “founding an Islamic, civilian rule.”
