Iran MP slams UK 'Undiplomatic' Moves

“If British officials ward off responsibility for their irrational and bullying moves, the Iranian nation will deliver an appropriate and firm response to them,” said a member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Esmail Kowsari.

He added that the “sudden and unannounced” closure of the British Embassy in Tehran and the role Britain played in imposing new EU sanctions against Iranian officials run counter to common diplomatic and international regulations.

On Wednesday, British charge d'affaires in Tehran ordered the embassy to shut its doors to dozens of Iranians applying for visas until further notice.

The move came after the European Union on April 12 imposed a new round of sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, against 32 unnamed Iranian officials for what they have claimed as human rights abuses.

The measure was adopted at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. The names of these 32 individual have not been revealed yet.

Kowsari said that Britain has been adopting such measures against Tehran following the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and after the recent anti-government protests in the Middle East and North Africa inflicted damages to British interests.

“The hostility reflects the depth of the grudge the British establishment holds against the Iranian nation,” the Iranian lawmaker noted.
