Threatening Iran Can't Salvage Saudis: Lawmaker

“Making military threats against Iran will not salvage the Al-Saud [regime] from the Saudi people's demands,” said Mostafa Kavakebian, a member Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, on Saturday.

“The Saudi officials are not in a position to threaten the Iranian nation with military invasion,” the MP said.

On April 10, Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Ahmad Al-Qattan made military threats against Iran in an interview with Al-Hayat TV.

Kavakebian also made a reference to claims by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal about Tehran's intervention in the affairs of regional countries, describing them as “mere allegations.”

The Persian Gulf nations have certain expectations from their rulers and Riyadh cannot 'whitewash' the situation by making accusations against others, he noted.

The Iranian lawmaker also cautioned the Saudi regime of disillusionment unless it makes reforms in its ruling system.

On March 13, Saudi Arabia dispatched its armed forces to crisis-hit Bahrain to help Manama regime quell anti-government protests in the small Persian Gulf country.

This is while, Riyadh, like other Arab regimes, has faced a wave of anti-government protests in recent months.

The people across the oil-rich country are calling for political and economic reforms and a campaign against corruption.

Saudi Arabia does not have a parliament. Instead, it has a consultative Shura Council, which is an entirely appointed body, aimed at providing the king with consultations on policies, laws, and other matters.
