Larijani: US Aborting Democracy in Mideast

Addressing a Majlis open session on Sunday, Larijani said countries in the Middle East are making efforts to establish democracy in the region but the US seeks to abort such efforts by backing the use of violence in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain.

He pointed to the recent “contradictory and astonishing” remarks by the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the ongoing developments in the Middle East and North Africa and added that her words are in contradiction with claims by US officials on scrutinizing developments in the region.

Speaking at the end of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in the German capital of Berlin on Friday, Clinton accused Iran of hypocritically trying to exploit and hijack pro-democracy protests and to align itself with popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, while trying to thwart democratic movements at home and in Syria.

"They are trying to exploit unrest. They are trying to advance their agenda in neighboring countries. They continue to try to undermine peace and stability to provoke further conflict," Clinton proclaimed.

"And we want people in the region to understand that the Iranian government's motive here is to destabilize countries, not to assist them in their democratic transitions," she added.

Larijani said such paradoxical remarks by US officials indicate that White House leaders are confused by the regional developments.

“It is regretful that so many baseless and contradictory remarks are being blurted in the speech of just one [US] political figure,” the top Iranian parliamentarian added.

He noted that Washington intends to justify its brutal behavior in the past through “opportunism and violence” and emphasized, “The US believes that it can lead its political brutality to Iranian-Arabian strife through political wheeling and dealing and the use of force and deceit.”

However, the top Iranian official stressed that regional nations are vigilant and carefully monitoring regional events, adding, “The dictatorial and colonial behavior of the US is the root cause of the current problems in the region.”

Larijani suggested that US officials stop their aggressive behavior towards regional revolutions.
