MP: West Pursuing Hidden Agenda through War on Terrorism

Addressing the 'International Conference on Global Alliance against Terrorism for a Just Peace' here in Tehran on Sunday, Head of the parliament's Human Rights Committee Zohreh Elahian cautioned, "The West claims that it is fighting terrorism, but it is seeking to prepare the conditions to reach its political, military and even economic goals through its mottos about campaign against terrorism."

Elahian, who also chairs the NGOs Fraction at the Iranian parliament, blasted the West's double-standard policies on the issue of terrorism, and noted, "In the contemporary world, the world arrogance is trying to confiscate the rights of the nations in its own interests."

The lawmaker reminded US support for terrorist groups such as the al-Qaeda and Washington's negotiations with terrorist groups in Afghanistan, and said "this proves that the anti-terrorism mottos chanted by the western countries are just a justification for the hidden political goals of the powers".

She pointed to the different aspects of terrorism, and said the economic sanctions and embargos imposed on certain countries unfairly and for no good reason are a new form of terrorism.

"Today we are facing a phenomenon called economic terrorism, which shows itself in the form of economic sanctions."

"On the other hand, the psychological and media wars waged by the West against the other nations are another kind of terrorism," Elahian concluded.

Iranian officials have on many occasions blasted the West's double-standard approach towards terrorism, and condemned the intelligence agencies of certain western countries, specially the US, for supporting terrorist groups and organizations against Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said in a statement in August that while the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches special importance to its cooperation with the international community in anti-terrorism campaign, the western countries and the US in particular follow a double-standard policy towards the issue.

Mehman-Parast said extensive activities of the members of the anti-Iran terrorist Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) in these countries and their close relationship with the political figures there exemplify the same policy pursued by the US and its western allies.

He also pointed to the role of some western countries and their intelligence services, specially those belonging to the US, in supporting the terrorist organizations working against Iran like the grouplet led by Rigi and the PJAK as among other cases of such a double-standard behavior.

Mehman-Parast also reiterated that the US tried to cover up its own terrorist nature by raising claims against other countries and accusing them.
