Iranian FM Raps West's Double-Standard Stance on Human Rights

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast criticized the release of a list of names of 32 Iranians by the European Union as violators of human rights, and said EU action was following US policies.

He also said that the action is an effort to deviate public opinion from notorious and numberless violations on human rights by them in the Arab and regional countries and crimes committed by the Zionist regime in Palestine.

He said that inhuman oppression of peaceful demonstration of people in a number of countries and undemocratic law in confrontation with women veil indicates that Europe lacks the qualification in this concern.

He underlined that such acts show that the issue is politicized and that west has dual standard and unacceptable policies.

He recommended that EU, instead of supporting undemocratic regimes and opposition to democratic and independent countries like Iran, respect viewpoints of majority of people in the region and their legitimate demands and do not participate in these oppressions with its silence and take practical steps toward improving its policies.

Iran has always lashed out at the western countries for using human rights issues as a tool and pretext for pressurizing independent states to conceal their own crimes and wrong deeds.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in November lambasted continued violation of human rights by certain European countries, and asked them to listen to the demands of their people.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry in November issued a report on the violation of human rights by the US inside and outside its borders, and urged Washington to join the international conventions which prohibit such crimes.

It was stressed in the Foreign Ministry report that the United States, as a self-proclaimed standard bearer of defense for the human rights in the world, has despite the international community and the UN demand, and even despite President Barack Obama's promise, still not shut down the Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib horrendous prisons.
