Iran Lawmaker Wants MKO Extradited

“Not only must the Baghdad government expel [the members of] this terrorist cell from Iraq but they must be handed over to Iran so that they can be tried for the crimes they committed in the country,” member of the Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mehdi Mehdizadeh said.

He added that Tehran should use active diplomacy to facilitate the extradition of MKO terrorists.

“The presence of the MKO terrorist group in Camp Ashraf in Iraq is a major obstacle to the strengthening of ties between Iran and the Iraqi government,” Fars News Agency quoted Mehdizadeh as saying on Monday.

The MKO was founded in Iran in the 1960s, but its members fled to Iraq in the 1980s after carrying out a series of assassinations and bombings inside the country.

The MKO cooperated with Saddam in suppressing the 1991 uprising in southern Iraq and the massacre of Iraqi Kurds.

Following the ouster of Saddam in 2003, the Iraqi government has set numerous deadlines for the terrorist group to leave the country but MKO has managed to maintain Camp Ashraf due to US backing.
