Iraq Irked by AL Summit Cancellation

The Iraqi officials who accused the Saudi government of being behind the call, stated that the country has been unfriendly with the Iraqi government since the US-led invasion in 2003 and the Saudi officials want to fine the Iraqi people for showing solidarity with the Bahraini people in their uprising.

Officials say canceling the Arab League summit at a time when Iraq is regaining its position as a major country in the region will harm the other Arab countries more than Iraq. Iraqi lawmakers also say that if it happens, the Parliament will vote for suspending Iraq's membership in the Arab league.

Iraq has always supported the decision by the Arab League.

Analysts say ultimately this is a decision the Arab League will have to make but they say they believe that Iraq is playing an increasingly important role in the region and any possible delay or cancellation will affect Iraq's relations with the Arab countries.

In the mean time, Arab League chief Amr Moussa recently told reporters that not a single member state has the authority to cancel the summit. Iraqis also say hosting such summits will enable them to show their capabilities and participate in international events.
