Majlis Urges Quick UNHRC Action on Bahrain, Libya, Yemen

“The Majlis Human Rights Committee expects the UNHRC to hold an emergency session to examine the violation of human rights in Bahrain, Libya, and Yemen,” Karamirad told the Mehr News Agency on Wednesday.

The lawmaker also criticized international organizations for remaining silent about the excessive use of violence against Bahraini protesters.

“International organizations’ silence about the blatant violation of human rights by the Saudi and Bahraini governments shows that these governments for years have been setting the stage for the killing of Shias and the suppression of Islamic movements in the region,” he said.

Chairman of the Majlis Human Rights Committee Zohreh Elahian has also written a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, calling for his “responsible and effective” action to stop further violation of human rights in Bahrain.

Undoubtedly, the Bahraini people’s demands and human rights campaigners’ calls for the UN action necessitate the UN chief’s appropriate response, she said.

Elahian calls on Ban Ki-moon to use all available legal mechanisms to stop the ongoing violence, especially against children and women, and widespread violation of human rights in Bahrain and support Bahrainis’ legitimate demands for their legal and political rights.

Elsewhere in the letter, the lawmaker condemns the foreign countries’ involvement in the suppression of Bahrainis, saying foreign military intervention goes against principles of international law and violates Bahrainis’ right to self-determination.
